The modern neopagan movement emerged mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries, influenced by romantic nationalism, occult currents, and renewed interest in ancient mythologies. It grew substantially in the postwar period, with several well-known movements contributing to its public profile. Among the most prominent strands are Wicca, various forms of heathenry (such as Asatru or Odinism), Hellenismos (revival of ancient Greek religion), Druidry, and Kemetism (Egyptian revivals), as well as many localized or solitary practices. Many neopagans identify with a particular tradition, while others practice a personal, eclectic path.

Beliefs and practices vary by tradition but commonly include polytheism or animism, ethical frameworks regarding harm and responsibility, and ritual activities such as altars, seasonal celebrations, and rites of passage. Ritual calendars often follow a wheel of the year, marking solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days—festivals that celebrate agriculture, nature, and community. Magic and divination appear in some traditions, especially Wicca, but are not universal across neopagan paths.

Communities are typically decentralized, featuring covens, groves, study groups, or solitary practitioners. There is no single governing body, and practices are shaped by local culture and personal belief. Debates within neopaganism include cultural appropriation, reconstruction versus reconstruction-inspired practice, and how to balance modern life with ancient-inspired spirituality.
