In Norway the bunad is the best-known example of a nasjonaldrakt. A bunad denotes a particular region or parish and is distinguished by tailored garments, regional embroidery, and accompanying silver jewelry. Many bunads trace their style to 18th–19th century folk clothing and were revived during the national-romantic period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as symbols of cultural heritage and national identity.

Design and components of a bunad typically include a skirt or dress, a bodice or blouse, a jacket or outer garment, an apron, and often a belt, silver clasps, brooches, and a headdress or hat. Fabrics range from wool and linen to silk, with hand-embroidered patterns that may indicate district, family, or status. Colors, motifs, and the arrangement of decorative elements are specific to each region. Footwear and knitted stockings commonly complete the ensemble.

Wearing and occasions: the bunad is commonly worn on special occasions such as national day celebrations, weddings, baptisms, and confirmations. It is treated as formal dress, and many wearers have their garments custom-made to fit individual measurements and regional traditions.
