Nahatöötlus refers to the process of transforming raw animal hides and skins into usable leather. This multifaceted process is crucial for the production of a wide range of goods, from footwear and clothing to upholstery and accessories.

The initial stage involves preparing the hides, which typically includes cleaning, removing hair, and treating them to prevent decomposition. This is often achieved through soaking in lime solutions, a process known as liming. Following liming, the hides are de-haired and then subjected to bating, an enzymatic treatment that softens the skin and improves its texture.

The core of nahatöötlus is tanning, which stabilizes the collagen in the hide, making it resistant to decay and giving it the characteristic properties of leather. Traditional methods often employ vegetable tannins derived from tree bark and plant extracts. Chrome tanning, a more modern and faster method, uses chromium salts and is widely adopted for its efficiency and the production of soft, pliable leather. Other tanning methods exist, including aldehyde tanning and synthetic tanning.

After tanning, the leather undergoes several finishing processes. These can include splitting the hide into different thicknesses, staking to soften and stretch the material, and various surface treatments. Dyeing imparts color, while fatliquoring introduces oils to maintain flexibility and prevent the leather from becoming brittle. Finally, finishing operations like buffing, embossing, or coating can be applied to achieve the desired aesthetic and functional qualities.
