Nõudluriinipidamatus, also known as stress urinary incontinence (SUI), is a common medical condition characterized by the involuntary leakage of urine during physical activities that increase abdominal pressure. These activities can include coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting heavy objects. The underlying cause of SUI is a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and/or the urinary sphincter, which are responsible for controlling urine flow.

Several factors can contribute to the development of SUI. In women, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are significant risk factors due to the strain placed on the pelvic floor and hormonal changes. Obesity also increases intra-abdominal pressure, exacerbating the condition. In men, prostate surgery is a common cause. Other contributing factors include chronic coughing, constipation, and certain neurological conditions.

Diagnosis of SUI typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and sometimes urodynamic testing to assess bladder function. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition and individual patient factors. Conservative approaches include pelvic floor muscle exercises (Kegels), lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and fluid management, and the use of pessaries. If conservative methods are insufficient, medical treatments such as medications or surgical interventions may be considered. Surgery often aims to support the urethra and bladder neck to prevent leakage. While SUI can significantly impact quality of life, it is a treatable condition with various management strategies available.
