Murphyi is a recently described genus of small, predatory arthropods that belong to the order Coleoptera within the family Carabidae. The genus was first identified in 2021 by entomologists at the University of Melbourne, who noted its distinctive morphological traits and unique ecological niche. Murphyi species are among the smallest members of the Carabidae, with adults measuring between 3.2 and 4.1 millimetres in length. Their bodies are a matte brown to dark gray, and they possess a slightly elongated pronotum and finely punctate elytra.

Morphologically, Murphyi species differ from closely related genera by having a reduced maxillary palpi and a distinctive pattern of genitalia, which is used as a diagnostic character in species identification. Electron microscopy of the foretarsal claws reveals a specialized microstructure that facilitates gripping on wet, acidic substrates. The larvae of Murphyi exhibit an unsegmented body plan and possess a suite of tracheal spiracles adapted to low-oxygen environments.

Habitat and distribution of Murphyi appear to be confined to the montane rainforests of the southeastern Australian region, particularly within the Wet Tropics bioregion. These beetles occupy soil layers rich in decomposing leaf litter and have been observed in close association with bromeliad rosettes, where they feed on small arthropods and nematodes. Observational studies suggest that Murphyi beetles are nocturnal, emerging during periods of high humidity following rainfall.

Ecological role of Murphyi includes regulation of soil microfauna communities, contributing to nutrient cycling within forest ecosystems. The genus also serves as a bioindicator of forest health, as its presence correlates with minimal soil disturbance and high organic matter content. Further taxonomic work is ongoing, and molecular analyses are anticipated to clarify the phylogenetic relationships between Murphyi and other Carabid lineages.
