Muovikanava, commonly translated as plastic conduit, is a channel made of plastic designed to protect and route electrical cables in buildings and industrial installations. The term muovikanavista appears in Finnish text as an inflected form of muovikanava; the base term muovikanava is more common in everyday usage. Materials used for muovikanavat include PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polypropylene, and other plastics. Rigid conduits are often PVC-based (PVC-U or PVC-C), while flexible versions can be corrugated or spiral-wound.

There are two main types: rigid conduits, which are embedded in walls, floors, or ceilings and fixed with brackets or clamps; and flexible conduits, which allow easier routing around obstacles or through confined spaces. Bends and connections are achieved with specialized fittings such as elbows, tees, and couplings. Installation guidelines emphasize clean routing, adequate bend radii, and secure fixation to avoid movement or damage. Muovikanavat are available in indoor and outdoor variants, with outdoor types offering UV resistance and weatherproofing for exposed installations.

Applications and standards: muovikanavat are used to protect and organize electrical cables, data and communication lines, and sometimes low-voltage systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. In the European Union, conduit systems fall under standards in the EN 61386 family, and Finnish practice typically aligns with these EN standards through national standards by SFS. Fire performance, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance are considered in material selection and installation.

Advantages and limitations: plastic conduits provide corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, light weight, and relatively low cost, and they are easy to install. Limitations include potential brittleness in extreme temperatures, UV sensitivity for outdoor use, and the need to observe correct ratings for load, fire safety, and environmental exposure.
