Munuaiskasvain refers to a tumor located in the kidney. These growths can be either benign or malignant. Benign renal tumors, such as angiomyolipomas or adenomas, typically do not spread to other parts of the body and can often be managed conservatively or removed surgically if they cause symptoms. Malignant tumors, commonly known as renal cell carcinoma (RCC), are more serious and have the potential to invade surrounding tissues and metastasize.

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. It originates in the lining of the renal tubules. Risk factors associated with RCC include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and certain genetic syndromes. Symptoms can vary, and early-stage tumors may be asymptomatic, often being discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. When symptoms do occur, they can include blood in the urine (hematuria), pain in the flank or side, and a palpable mass in the abdomen.

Diagnosis of munuaiskasvain usually involves imaging studies like ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. A biopsy may be performed to determine the exact type of tumor and its grade. Treatment depends on the size, type, and stage of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health. Options can include surgery (nephrectomy, partial or radical), radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. Regular follow-up is often recommended after treatment to monitor for recurrence.
