A mudroom is a small entryway or transitional space near an exterior door, designed to trap dirt and moisture from outerwear, shoes, and gear before it reaches living areas. In North America it is common as part of houses with garages or back doors; in other regions it may be called a boot room or utility entry.

Typical features include built-in storage such as benches, cubbies, hooks, and cabinets for coats, hats, gloves, and bags; a durable, easy-to-clean floor and walls; a mat to wipe feet; and seating for removing footwear.

Design considerations include locating the space near an exterior door or garage, allowing enough room for movement, and providing bright lighting and ventilation. Flooring should be moisture resistant and, if possible, sloped or draining to manage spills. Doors into the main living area are often weather-sealed.

Benefits and variations: mudrooms reduce indoor dirt and simplify organization, serving as a place for laundry sorting, mail, and accessory storage. Variations include integrated laundry-mudroom combos, boot rooms, or simple entryway nooks.
