Mobiilikortti is a digital version of a physical card stored on a mobile device, used to access services that would otherwise require a plastic card. It is a general concept applied in many sectors, including public transport, educational institutions, libraries, workplace access, loyalty programs and payments. The credential is typically delivered through a mobile app or integrated into a smartphone wallet, and is unlocked with a PIN, password, or biometric verification.

How it works: A secure credential is issued to the device and may be stored in the device's secure element or in trusted software, depending on implementation. Verification can occur offline, if the pass is preloaded, or online, via the service provider. Access or payment is often enabled through contactless NFC transmission or by presenting a QR code.

Advantages include convenience, reduced use of plastic cards, easier updates and revocation, and the potential for stronger authentication when combined with device security. Challenges include privacy and data management, interoperability between different providers, device dependency, and the risk of device loss or theft. Successful deployment typically requires standard interfaces, strong security practices, and clear consent from users.

In Finland and elsewhere, the mobiilikortti concept has seen adoption across public transport, libraries, universities, and municipal services, with ongoing efforts toward cross-service interoperability and integration with existing identity and payment ecosystems.
