A microcontroller, often abbreviated as MCU, is a small computer on a single integrated circuit. It contains a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals. Microcontrollers are designed for embedded applications, meaning they are used within larger systems to perform specific, dedicated tasks. Unlike general-purpose microprocessors found in personal computers, microcontrollers are optimized for low power consumption and cost-effectiveness.

The processor core in a microcontroller executes instructions fetched from its memory. This memory typically includes both program memory (like Flash) to store the code and data memory (like RAM) for temporary storage. The programmable input/output (I/O) peripherals are crucial for interacting with the outside world. These can include digital inputs and outputs for controlling LEDs or reading buttons, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for reading sensor values, timers for precise timing operations, and communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, or I2C for talking to other devices.

Microcontrollers are ubiquitous in modern electronics. They are found in everything from simple household appliances like washing machines and microwave ovens to complex systems like automotive engine control units, medical devices, and industrial automation equipment. The development of microcontroller technology has enabled the miniaturization and increased functionality of countless electronic products. Programming a microcontroller typically involves writing software in languages like C or assembly, which is then compiled and loaded onto the device.
