Microendemic describes a species or population with an extremely restricted geographic distribution, often confined to a single locality such as a small island, a spring or cave, a valley, or a narrow forest patch. It is a subset of endemism, emphasizing the very small scale of range that can increase vulnerability to local events.

Assessing microendemic status relies on spatial measures such as extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO). There is no universal threshold, but ranges on the order of tens to a few hundred square kilometers are commonly cited, especially for invertebrates and cave or stream taxa. Data deficiencies and uneven sampling can obscure true distributions.

Microendemic patterns arise from isolation, niche specialization, and limited dispersal, with islands, isolated mountains, cave systems, and spring habitats serving as common settings. The combination of historical fragmentation, ecological tolerance limits, and high local diversification yields many lineages known from only a single site.

Conservation implications are significant. Small populations are highly sensitive to habitat loss, climate change, stochastic events, and invasive species. Protecting the locality, maintaining habitat integrity, and prioritizing surveys to document diversity are central, while ex situ or targeted management may be necessary for particularly at-risk microendemics.

Microendemism highlights how fine-scale processes shape biodiversity. It underlines the need for habitat protection at local scales and careful consideration in biodiversity assessments, complemented by taxonomic research and monitoring to distinguish true microendemics from data-poor generalists.
