Mehhatroonikas is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that combines mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control engineering to design, analyze, and manufacture products and systems with integrated mechanical, electronic, and software components. It aims to create intelligent, compact, and reliable mechatronic systems by coordinating hardware and software from the outset.

Key components of mechatronic systems include mechanical subsystems (structures, drives, linkages), sensors and actuators, embedded controllers and microprocessors, power electronics, and the software that links perception, decision making, and actuation. System-level design emphasizes interfaces, real-time control, and safety considerations, often using model-based design, simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Applications span many industries. In manufacturing, mechatronics enable automation and precision production. In transportation and automotive engineering, electronic control units, drive-by-wire systems, and active safety features are common. Consumer electronics, robotics, medical devices, aerospace systems, and energy technologies also rely on mechatronic solutions.

History and education: the field developed in the late 20th century as electronics and computer control became essential to mechanical devices. Today, mechatronics is taught as a distinct discipline in engineering schools, sometimes under degrees titled mechatronics engineering or mechatronics and automation. Research areas include modeling and control, perception and sensing, smart materials, human–machine interaction, and cyber-physical systems.

Challenges and trends: practitioners address integration of disparate subsystems, reliability, and cost, while leveraging advances in sensors, AI, digital twins, additive manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 to create smarter products.
