Megabats, commonly known as fruit bats or flying foxes, form the family Pteropodidae within the suborder Megachiroptera. They are among the largest bats and are characteristic of the Old World fruit bats, found across Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Most species do not echolocate and instead rely on vision and smell to locate fruit, nectar, and flowers.

Taxonomy and diversity: The family includes several genera, notably Pteropus (the flying foxes) and Rousettus (the tomb bats). A minority of megabats, such as Rousettus species, use a simple form of echolocation produced by tongue clicks, but most megabats do not rely on echolocation for navigation.

Ecology and diet: Megabats inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, and coastal regions, roosting in trees in large colonies by day and foraging at night. Their diet is primarily fruit, nectar, and pollen, which makes them important seed dispersers and pollinators. Some species travel long distances between roosts and fruiting trees, contributing to broad ecological connectivity.

Reproduction and behavior: Reproduction is typically slow, with most species giving birth to one pup per year after a multi-month gestation. Pups are raised by the mother and may remain with the roost or accompany adults after weaning. Social organization ranges from small groups to large roosting colonies.

Threats and conservation: Habitat loss, hunting for bushmeat, and disturbance of roosts threaten many megabat species. Disease outbreaks in fruit bat populations have been reported in some regions. Several megabat species are listed as threatened or near threatened by the IUCN, and conservation efforts emphasize habitat protection and the safeguarding of roosting sites.
