A disperser is a device that spreads or separates the constituent parts of a beam, spectrum, or mixture according to a variable property such as wavelength. In optics, a disperser is typically an element that divides incoming light into its constituent wavelengths, enabling analysis or measurement of spectral content. Dispersers are usually described as dispersive elements and can be either reflective or transmissive.

The most common optical dispersers are prisms and diffraction gratings. A prism disperses light through refraction, exploiting the wavelength dependence of the refractive index of the material. A diffraction grating uses interference from a periodic structure to produce angular or linear dispersion, offering high or adjustable resolution. Grisms combine a grating with a prism to provide dispersion with a straight-through optical path. Other dispersers include dynamic devices such as acousto-optic or crystal-based modulators that separate light in time or wavelength.

Applications of dispersers span spectroscopy, astronomy, chemistry, and materials science. They are key components in spectrometers and spectrographs, where they convert light into a spectrum for analysis. In astronomy, dispersers resolve stellar or galactic spectra; in laboratories, they identify chemical composition and material properties; in lasers and telecommunications, they enable wavelength selection and tuning.

Performance considerations include spectral resolving power, dispersion (linear and angular), wavelength range, efficiency, and management of higher diffraction orders and aberrations. The choice of disperser depends on required resolution, spectral coverage, throughput, and practical factors such as size, cost, and compatibility with detectors.
