Matování is a Czech term used in different contexts to describe making a surface or image appear matte, i.e., non-reflective, or creating a matte mask for compositing. In the physical sense, matování refers to finishing a surface so that it loses gloss. This can be achieved by applying a matte varnish or coating, using mating agents, or by mechanical means such as sanding and etching. The result is a uniform, non-glossy appearance that reduces glare and emphasizes texture. It is commonly applied to materials like wood, metal, glass, plastic, and printed surfaces, and is valued for a subdued, even look and improved readability of details.

In digital and audiovisual contexts, matování describes the creation of a matte or alpha mask used in compositing. A matte defines which parts of an image or render are opaque, transparent, or semi-transparent, enabling the combination of multiple layers or elements. Matte creation can result from manual rotoscoping and masking, or from automated keying and segmentation techniques. In post-production, mattes are essential for isolating foreground objects, removing backgrounds, or blending renders into a scene with correct edge handling and depth.

The term is thus applied to both physical surface treatment and digital image processing, with the common goal of controlling light interaction and visibility. In Czech technical usage, matování distinguishes between a matte finish on a surface and the creation of a matte for image compositing, with context clarifying the domain.
