Historically, mapmaking evolved from hand-drawn sketches to precise geodetic surveys and digital maps. Early maps appeared in ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, and China, with later cartographers such as Ptolemy shaping coordinate systems used for centuries. The 18th through 19th centuries saw improvements from triangulation and standard measurements. The 20th century introduced computer cartography, while satellites and remote sensing expanded data sources, and GIS emerged as a comprehensive framework for storing, analyzing, and displaying spatial information.

Modern mapmakers use field data collection, measurement, and data integration to produce maps. Tools include traditional instruments such as theodolites and GPS receivers, alongside remote sensing technologies. In the digital era, GIS software and cartographic design tools enable the combination of multiple data layers—topography, demographics, infrastructure—to generate various map types, with careful attention to scale, projection, symbolization, and accessibility.

Applications span urban planning, environmental management, transportation, public health, and education. They include nautical and aeronautical charts, cadastral maps for land ownership, and interactive web maps for wide public use. Ethical considerations cover accuracy, transparency about data sources, representation, privacy, and copyright, with an emphasis on avoiding biases and respecting Indigenous and local knowledge.

Most mapmakers have training in geography, cartography, or GIS, often through universities or professional programs. Professional organizations support standards, certification, and venues for publishing and collaboration.
