Mammo, short for mammogram, is a type of X-ray imaging used to examine breast tissue. It is primarily used as a screening tool to detect breast cancer in its early stages, often before symptoms appear. Mammography can also be used diagnostically to investigate concerning symptoms such as a lump, nipple discharge, or changes in breast skin.

The procedure involves two X-ray views of each breast, taken from different angles. The breast is compressed between two plates for a brief period to spread out the tissue and reduce the amount of radiation needed, as well as to improve the clarity of the image. While some discomfort or a temporary pinching sensation is common during compression, it is generally well-tolerated.

Mammograms are particularly important for women, especially as they age. Guidelines from various health organizations recommend routine screening mammograms for women starting at certain ages, typically between 40 and 50, with frequency varying based on individual risk factors and medical advice. Early detection through mammography significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival from breast cancer. In some cases, a mammogram may identify areas that require further investigation, such as additional imaging or a biopsy.
