Lõikühendused, also known as butt joints, are a fundamental woodworking technique where two pieces of material are joined end-to-end. This type of joint is characterized by the fact that the end grain of one piece meets the end grain of another. While simple in concept, the strength and appearance of a lõikühendus depend heavily on how it is executed and reinforced.

Without any reinforcement, a pure lõikühendus is generally considered weak, especially under tensile stress. The end grain does not have the same holding power for fasteners or glue as edge or face grain. Therefore, lõikühendused are rarely used in isolation for structural applications.

To improve their strength, lõikühendused are typically reinforced. Common methods include the use of mechanical fasteners such as screws, nails, or bolts. Glue is almost always used in conjunction with mechanical fasteners to enhance the bond. Specialized hardware like metal plates, corner brackets, or dowels can also be incorporated. Lõikühendused are often used in situations where the joint is not subjected to high stress or where its appearance is secondary. Examples include internal bracing, temporary constructions, or when building up thicker sections by joining shorter pieces. In some cases, meticulous surface preparation and the use of strong adhesives can yield a surprisingly durable joint, though it's still considered a less robust option compared to joints that involve interlocking or edge-to-edge connections.
