They are part of the Varanidae family, which includes other well-known species like the Komodo dragon. Lykileiningar are medium-sized reptiles, typically reaching lengths of 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6.5 feet), though some individuals may grow slightly larger.

These lizards are primarily arboreal, spending much of their time in trees and shrubs. Their diet consists mainly of insects, small vertebrates, and occasionally fruit, though they are opportunistic feeders. Their name, derived from the Indonesian words *lyki* (meaning "lightning") and *leiningar* (meaning "lizard"), reflects their swift and agile movements, which allow them to hunt efficiently in their forest habitats.

Lykileiningar have a slender, elongated body with a long tail, which aids in balance and maneuverability. Their scales are typically grayish-brown, providing effective camouflage among the foliage.
