A luftutjämnare, or air balancer, is a piece of lifting equipment that utilizes compressed air to suspend and move loads. It is commonly used in industrial settings for applications where precise control and smooth vertical movement are essential. Unlike a traditional hoist that uses a motor and gearbox, an air balancer relies on an air cylinder and a control valve system.

The core principle of operation involves a piston within a cylinder that is raised or lowered by regulating the flow of compressed air. When air is introduced, it pushes the piston upwards, lifting the load. Releasing air allows the piston to descend. A key feature of many air balancers is their "float" or "zero-gravity" capability. This allows the operator to position the load with very little effort, as the air pressure can be precisely adjusted to counterbalance the weight of the load. This makes them ideal for tasks involving repetitive lifting and precise placement, such as assembly lines or machine tending.

Air balancers are known for their simplicity, reliability, and relatively low maintenance requirements compared to electric hoists. They are often preferred in environments where dust or explosive atmospheres might be present, as they do not generate sparks. The speed of lifting and lowering is controlled by the operator's manipulation of the control handle or pendant, offering a high degree of manual dexterity. Safety features often include overload protection and emergency stop mechanisms. They are typically suspended from a trolley on an overhead crane or a fixed jib crane for horizontal movement.
