Luchtruimradar, or airspace radar, is a radar system used to monitor and manage the airspace within a defined volume. It detects, identifies, and tracks aircraft and other objects, providing the situational picture required for air traffic control, flight safety, and national sovereignty.

Most luchtruimradar deployments are ground based, though airborne and relay systems exist. A typical installation includes a radar antenna, transmitter, receiver, and a central processor that converts radar echoes into tracks. The system may operate as primary radar, which detects objects by reflected radio waves, and as secondary surveillance radar (SSR), which interrogates aircraft transponders to obtain identity, altitude, and other data. Modern networks commonly combine SSR with automatic dependent surveillance (ADS-B) data and other sensor inputs, and may feed weather overlays and other information.

Data from luchtruimradar is displayed to air traffic controllers who use it to maintain separation, issue headings, speeds, and altitude assignments, and coordinate handoffs between control centers. The system supports en-route surveillance, terminal area control, and approach procedures, and is often integrated with collision avoidance and flight data processing systems.

Limitations include range and line-of-sight constraints, weather clutter, and signal interference. Advances in technology, such as phased-array and AESA radars, digital signal processing, and data fusion, have increased coverage, accuracy, and update rates while reducing manpower needs. In many countries, luchtruimradar data is complemented by ADS-B, multilateration, and satellite-based surveillance to provide a robust airspace picture.

Historically, airspace radar emerged from early radar research and expanded with the growth of commercial aviation and military control systems. Today it remains a core component of civil and military airspace management.
