A typical system comprises loudspeakers, amplifiers, digital signal processing, mixing consoles, microphones, and cabling, with optional wireless links and networked audio. Designers consider room geometry, background noise, seating layout, and acoustic anomalies; they model coverage, select components, and design the signal flow from source to loudspeakers.

The design process includes site surveys, acoustic measurements, system modeling (often with software such as EASE or related tools), speaker placement, timing and alignment, and objective tuning. After installation, commissioning involves calibration, equalization, and limiting to meet criteria for frequency balance, impulse response, and speech intelligibility (evaluated via metrics such as C50/C80 and RT60).
