A listserver, also known as a mailing list server, is a software system that facilitates the distribution of electronic messages to a group of subscribers. It allows users to send a single message to a designated email address, which is then automatically forwarded to all subscribers on the list. Listservers were among the earliest forms of online communication and remain widely used for professional, educational, and community purposes.

The concept of a listserver emerged in the 1970s and 1980s, with early implementations appearing on university networks and early internet platforms. The name "listserver" originates from the LISTSERV software, developed at Purdue University in 1986, which became one of the most popular listserver applications. While LISTSERV remains influential, modern listservers now include various open-source and proprietary alternatives such as Majordomo, Mailman, and Sympa.

Listservers operate by managing subscriber databases, handling message distribution, and often providing features like message archiving, moderation, and subscription management. Subscribers typically join a list by sending a request to a specific email address, which is processed by the listserver software.
