Linnetyg, or linen fabric, is a textile made from the bast fibers of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). It is valued for its strength, natural luster, and excellent breathability, making it a popular choice for warm-weather garments and home textiles.

Production and composition: Linnetyg is produced from flax fibers that are grown, harvested, and subjected to retting to release the fibers. The fibers are then scutched and hackled to separate long fibers from shorter ones, spun into yarn, and woven into fabric. Linnetyg can be 100% flax or blended with other fibers such as cotton, viscose, or elastane to alter stretch, softness, or drape. Finishes may include bleaching, dyeing, antimicrobial treatments, or calendering for a smoother surface.

Characteristics: The fabric is known for high tensile strength, excellent moisture absorption, and quick-drying properties. It has a crisp, cool feel and a natural sheen. Linen wrinkles easily, and its weave may show subtle slubs or texture from the natural fibers. Over time, linnetyg tends to become softer with washing and use.

Uses and care: Common applications include shirts, blouses, dresses, table linens, napkins, bedding, and curtains. It is typically machine washable; many users iron linen when damp for a smooth finish. First washes can cause some shrinkage, so pre-shrinking or careful washing can be prudent.

History and distribution: Linen is one of the oldest textiles, with a long history in Europe. Traditional centers include Belgium and Ireland, though flax farming and linnetyg production occur worldwide. Its durability and biodegradability contribute to its continued use in sustainable textile practices.
