Liigesepõletik, or arthritis, is a general term referring to inflammation of one or more joints. This inflammation can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the affected joints. There are many different types of liigesepõletik, each with its own causes and characteristics.

The most common form is osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition where the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down over time. This often affects weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips, as well as hands and spine. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the joint lining, leading to inflammation and potential joint deformity. Other types include gout, caused by uric acid crystal buildup in joints, and psoriatic arthritis, which affects some people with psoriasis.

Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Joint pain is a primary symptom, often worsening with activity or at the end of the day. Stiffness, particularly in the morning, is also common. Swelling, redness, and warmth around the joint can indicate active inflammation. Fatigue and a general feeling of unwellness can accompany some types of liigesepõletik.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, blood tests to check for inflammation markers or antibodies, and imaging studies like X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound to visualize the joints. Treatment aims to manage pain, reduce inflammation, preserve joint function, and improve quality of life. This may include medications such as pain relievers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic agents. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, lifestyle modifications (like exercise and weight management), and in some cases, surgery can also be beneficial.
