Liðagigtar is the Icelandic term for arthritis. It is a general term encompassing a group of rheumatic diseases characterized by inflammation of one or more joints. While the exact causes vary depending on the specific type of arthritis, common contributing factors include genetic predisposition, autoimmune responses, wear and tear on joints, and infections.

The most prevalent form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, often referred to as degenerative joint disease. This condition arises from the breakdown of cartilage, the protective tissue that cushions the ends of bones within a joint. As cartilage wears down, bone rubs against bone, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Osteoarthritis commonly affects weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips, as well as hands and the spine.

Another significant category is inflammatory arthritis, which includes conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. These are typically autoimmune diseases where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own joint tissues, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis often affects smaller joints in the hands and feet symmetrically, while psoriatic arthritis is associated with psoriasis, a skin condition.

Symptoms of liðagigtar can range from mild to severe and often include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, redness, and a reduced range of motion. These symptoms can fluctuate, with periods of increased activity (flares) and periods of remission. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, imaging tests like X-rays or MRIs, and blood tests to detect inflammation markers or specific antibodies.

While there is no cure for many forms of liðagigtar, various treatments aim to manage symptoms, reduce inflammation, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life. These may include medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologics, alongside physical therapy, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. In some cases, surgery may be considered to repair or replace damaged joints.
