Ladingschemas are data models used to describe cargo and related information within shipping and logistics documents, particularly those associated with the bill of lading and loading manifests. They aim to standardize how goods, parties, and transport details are represented so that carriers, freight forwarders, ports, and customs authorities can exchange data efficiently. There is no single universal ladingschema; rather, organizations often implement their own schemas aligned with established standards and industry practices.

A typical ladingschema covers core elements such as shipper and consignee details, notify party, vessel and voyage information, ports of loading and discharge, cargo description, quantity, weight or volume, packaging, marks and numbers, container and seal data, and handling or dangerous goods information. It may also include financial terms, currency, freight charges, references, and timestamps. Many schemas enforce validation rules, data types, mandatory fields, and controlled vocabularies to maintain data quality across systems.

In practice, ladingschemas are implemented as XML schemas, JSON schemas, or mappings to EDI (electronic data interchange) formats. They often align with broader standards such as UN/CEFACT or EDIFACT for interoperability with existing shipping and customs processes. Versioning and change management are important because regulatory and commercial requirements evolve over time.

Use of ladingschemas supports API integrations, ERP and warehouse systems, and port community systems by providing a consistent data contract for cargo information. Adoption varies by organization, but the goal is consistent, machine-readable data that accelerates clearance, tracking, and settlement.
