Käyttäytymistreenejä, often translated as behavior training, refers to the systematic process of modifying or teaching specific behaviors in animals, most commonly dogs. The core principle behind these training methods is to encourage desirable actions and discourage undesirable ones through the use of reinforcement and sometimes punishment. Modern behavior training largely relies on positive reinforcement, where a reward such as a treat, praise, or a favorite toy is given immediately after the animal performs the desired behavior. This association makes the animal more likely to repeat the behavior in the future.

Other common training techniques include negative punishment, which involves removing something the animal desires when an unwanted behavior occurs, and classical conditioning, where a neutral stimulus is paired with a naturally occurring stimulus to elicit a conditioned response. For instance, a dog might learn to associate the sound of a treat bag with receiving a treat. Less emphasis is placed on positive punishment, which involves applying an aversive stimulus to decrease the likelihood of a behavior.

The goals of behavior training are varied, ranging from basic obedience commands like sit, stay, and come, to addressing more complex behavioral issues such as aggression, separation anxiety, and excessive barking. Effective behavior training requires consistency, patience, and an understanding of animal learning theory. It is often undertaken by pet owners themselves, but professional trainers and behaviorists are consulted for challenging cases or for specialized training needs, including service animal preparation. The underlying philosophy emphasizes building a strong bond and clear communication between the animal and its owner.
