Kotiimurit, also known as home mice or house mice, are small rodents belonging to the genus *Mus*, specifically the species *Mus musculus domesticus*. These creatures are among the most widespread and adaptable mammals on Earth, thriving in close association with human habitation. Originally descended from wild field mice, kotiimurit have evolved to exploit resources provided by human environments, making them a common urban and suburban pest.

Kotiimurit are typically grayish-brown in color, with a slender body measuring about 7 to 10 centimeters in length, excluding the tail, which can be nearly as long. Their small size, agility, and ability to reproduce rapidly—with females giving birth to litters of 5 to 12 pups every three weeks—contribute to their success as invasive species. They are nocturnal, preferring to forage for food under cover of darkness, though they may become active during the day in heavily infested areas.

These rodents are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of human food sources, including grains, seeds, fruits, and even pet food. While they primarily seek sustenance, they can also contaminate food supplies with urine, feces, and fur, posing health risks such as foodborne illnesses and allergies. Kotiimurit are also known carriers of diseases like hantavirus and salmonellosis, further emphasizing their role as public health concerns.

Controlling kotiimurit populations often involves integrated pest management strategies, including sanitation (sealing entry points, storing food securely), traps, and, in severe cases, rodenticides. Prevention is key, as their reproductive rate and adaptability make eradication difficult once infestations take hold. Despite their negative associations, kotiimurit have also played significant roles in scientific research, particularly in genetics and medicine, due to their well-studied biology and short lifespan.
