It defines how much space a column's content occupies on the page or screen and interacts with type size, margins and gutters to determine line length and overall rhythm. In traditional print design, kolumnbredd is shaped by the page format and the design grid. Designers often choose column widths to achieve readable line lengths, typically expressed in millimeters or pikas, and adjusted in relation to the chosen font size and leading. The goal is a comfortable reading experience, commonly around 50–75 characters per line, depending on language and typography.

In web design, kolumnbredd is managed with layout systems and CSS properties. A multi-column layout can specify a minimum column width with column-width, a fixed number of columns with column-count, and the spacing between columns with column-gap. Responsive layouts adapt kolumnbredd to the available viewport, often using media queries, fluid grids, and relative units such as em or rem.
