Klimaprognosen are estimates of future climate conditions derived from computer models and scenario analyses. They aim to quantify how temperature, precipitation and related variables may change under different trajectories of greenhouse gas emissions and other forcings, helping governments, businesses and communities anticipate impacts and plan responses.

Methodologically, prognoses rely on climate models that simulate physical processes in the atmosphere, oceans, land surface and cryosphere. Projections are generated by running these models with a range of emission scenarios, such as the IPCC's Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), often using multi-model ensembles to capture uncertainty. To provide regional detail, global outputs are frequently downscaled using regional climate models or statistical methods. Outputs are typically reported as changes relative to a historical baseline, with maps and statistics for temperature, precipitation, extreme events, sea level and other variables, across multiple time horizons (near term, mid-century, end of century).

Interpretation: prognoses are probabilistic and contingent on assumed emissions pathways; differences between models, internal variability and downscaling choices contribute to uncertainty. Users often present ranges, ensemble means, or percentiles rather than single values.

Applications and limitations: they inform climate risk assessments, infrastructure design, agriculture, water management and policy; limitations include biases in models, regional inaccuracies, non-stationarity, and limited ability to predict rare events. Communication of uncertainty is essential for effective use.
