Kitten refers to a juvenile domestic cat (Felis catus) typically less than one year old. Kittens are born blind and deaf; eyes usually open at 7–14 days, and hearing develops in the first weeks. They rely on warmth and the mother’s milk, and begin to explore as they grow.

Weaning occurs gradually from about four weeks, with full transition to solid food by eight to twelve weeks. Socialization during the first two to three months influences adult behavior, including play, fear responses, and tolerance for handling. By two to three months, kittens become active and increasingly coordinated; many begin practicing predatory play.

Kittens require a balanced diet formulated for growth with higher protein and energy; fresh water should be available. A safe, stimulating environment helps reduce accidents and stress. Vaccinations generally start around six to eight weeks and continue every few weeks until about four months, followed by boosters as recommended. Routine veterinary care includes parasite control, dental care, and microchipping as desired. Spaying or neutering is commonly advised around five to six months to prevent unwanted litters.

Kittens exhibit play, climbing, pouncing, and scratching. Provide outlets such as scratching posts, interactive toys, and safe climbing structures. Litter box training is usually established early; keep boxes clean and accessible.

With proper care, cats that begin life as kittens can live well into their teens or longer. Adoption considerations include temperament, space, and compatibility with other pets.
