kiibis

Kiibis are a fictional genus of small, nocturnal, arboreal mammals described in worldbuilding and speculative fiction. They are said to inhabit the Kiiba Archipelago, a chain of temperate forest islands in the southern reaches of the fictional world. In the setting’s taxonomy, kiibis are placed in the family Kiibidae within the order Diprotodontia, making them marsupial-like relatives of kangaroos and possums within the imagined biology.

Physically, kiibis are compact, typically 12–18 cm in body length with a tail of 15–22 cm and a weight of about 120–180 g. They have soft, dense fur that ranges from gray to russet, large forward-facing eyes, and small rounded ears. A prehensile tail and strong hind limbs aid in climbing, while paw pads and curved claws provide grip on branches.

Behaviorally, kiibis are primarily nocturnal and are found either solitary or in small family groups. They forage on fruit, nectar, and insects, and occasionally opportunistically prey on small vertebrates. Vocalizations are high-pitched calls, supplemented by scent marking to delineate territory. Reproduction occurs seasonally, with typical litter sizes of one or two offspring. Young spend several weeks in the mother’s pouch or a nursery nest before venturing independently.

Distribution and conservation, in the fiction, place kiibis as endemic to the Kiiba Archipelago, with most populations in protected forests. Habitat loss from logging and climate-driven forest changes threaten some groups. Conservation status is often shown as not evaluated or data deficient in the narrative world; in many stories, ecological protection improves prospects.
