A kardiologista is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart and blood vessels. They assess cardiovascular risk, manage acute cardiac events, and follow patients with chronic heart conditions. Depending on their subspecialty, they may work with patients of all ages, including children in pediatric cardiology.

Becoming a kardiologista requires completing a medical degree, a residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in cardiology. In many countries, board certification or eligibility is required. Subspecialties include interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, heart failure and transplant, cardiac imaging, and pediatric cardiology.

Cardiology encompasses a wide range of diagnostics, treatments, and preventive care. Diagnostic tools commonly used include electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, stress testing, Holter monitoring, and advanced imaging such as cardiac computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatments can involve medications, lifestyle and risk-factor modification, and, when necessary, invasive procedures. Procedures frequently performed by kardiologists include coronary angiography with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation, and ablation for certain arrhythmias. In collaboration with cardiac surgeons, they may be involved in valvular therapies and transcatheter valve procedures.

Kardiologists work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and academic centers, often coordinating care with primary care physicians and other specialists. They treat conditions such as coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, valvular disease, hypertension, cardiomyopathies, and congenital heart disease in appropriate patient groups.
