Kaardistuses is the Estonian term for cartography, the practice and science of creating maps. It combines data collection and analysis with graphic design to convey geographic information clearly and effectively.

The field encompasses acquiring spatial data by surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and GNSS; integrating these data in geographic information systems; and producing maps with appropriate scale, projection, generalization, and symbolization. It also includes labeling, color theory, typography, and map layout to ensure readability and utility.

Typical subfields include topographic mapping, thematic mapping, cadastral mapping, hydrographic and navigational charts, as well as digital and web cartography. With the rise of digital technologies, many Kaardistuses activities are carried out within GIS environments and through online platforms.

Historically, cartography evolved from hand-drawn maps to mechanical production and, since the late 20th century, to digital cartography. In Estonia, state mapping agencies, legal geodata frameworks, and open data initiatives have shaped contemporary Kaardistuses, with standardized coordinate systems and interoperable datasets.

Today, technology drives the field: GIS software, satellite imagery, aerial photography, and web-mapping tools enable spatial analysis, real-time data sharing, and interactive map services. The discipline supports planning, transportation, environmental management, education, and cultural preservation, while prioritizing accuracy, legibility, accessibility, and user-centered design.
