Jurnalism is the activity of gathering, evaluating, creating, and communicating information about current events and issues to the public through news organizations, online outlets, and other media. Although the correct English spelling is journalism, some contexts use the variant "jurnalism."

Journalism serves several core purposes: informing citizens, providing context, and enabling public discussion; acting as a watchdog by scrutinizing power; and presenting diverse perspectives while clarifying what is known and what remains uncertain.

Practices rely on verification, attribution, independence, and fairness. Journalists verify facts with multiple sources, clearly attribute quotes and data, disclose conflicts of interest, and strive to minimize harm when reporting on vulnerable individuals or communities. Transparency about sources, methods, and corrections strengthens accountability.

Journalism takes many forms, including breaking news, investigative reporting, feature reporting, data journalism, and opinion or commentary. Newsrooms assemble reports through observation, interviews, document analysis, and collaboration, while editors make judgments about relevance, accuracy, and public value.

Historically, journalism emerged with print newspapers in the early modern period, expanded with telecommunication and broadcasting, and transformed in the digital age with online platforms, real-time updates, and user-generated content. Today, the ecosystem includes traditional outlets, independent projects, and social media, raising questions about credibility, bias, and trust.

Ethical standards are guides rather than rules, but many codes emphasize truthfulness, accountability, independence, fairness, and privacy. The concept of jurnalism, like journalism, is rooted in serving the public interest and supporting informed democratic discourse.
