Electrical isolants, or dielectrics, provide high electrical resistance and mechanical support. Common materials include porcelain, glass, mica, ceramics, and certain polymers such as PVC, epoxy resins, and silicone rubbers. They are essential in power substations, transmission lines, switchgear, and electronic devices to prevent leakage current and arcing.

Thermal isolants reduce heat transfer and improve energy efficiency. Typical materials include mineral wool, polyurethane and polystyrene foams, cellulose, fiberglass, wood fiber, and aerogels. They are used in walls, roofs, HVAC ducts, refrigeration, and appliances. Key properties include low thermal conductivity, fire resistance, moisture behavior, and durability.

Acoustic isolants suppress or absorb sound. Constructed from mineral wool, fiberglass, foams, perforated panels, and porous composites, they are applied in building partitions, automotive interiors, machinery enclosures, and studios. Performance is described by sound transmission class (STC) or noise reduction coefficients in various standards.

Selection of isolants depends on exposure conditions, temperature, mechanical loads, moisture, fire safety, and environmental impact. Important properties include thermal conductivity or impedance, density, dielectric strength, fire rating, and durability. Proper installation reduces bridging and moisture accumulation.
