An inkjet printer is a type of non-impact printer that creates images and text by depositing tiny droplets of ink onto a substrate, typically paper. It is widely used for home and office documents, as well as for photographic prints and specialized applications such as textiles. Unlike laser printers, which use toner and high heat, inkjet devices apply liquid ink through microscopic nozzles.

Most consumer inkjets use drop-on-demand technology, producing ink droplets only when needed. There are two main actuation methods: thermal inkjet and piezoelectric inkjet. In thermal inkjet, heating elements vaporize ink to form a bubble that ejects a droplet. In piezoelectric inkjet, a piezo crystal changes shape to force a droplet out of the nozzle. Print heads may be integrated with ink cartridges or with ink tanks in continuous systems. Inkjets can print on coated papers and, with special inks, on textiles, plastics, and other materials.

Inks for inkjet printers are typically water-based and come in cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK); some machines use additional colors for a broader color gamut. Inks can be dye-based or pigment-based, affecting color vibrancy and longevity. Color management uses ICC profiles to reproduce true colors across devices. Resolution is specified in dpi; droplet size and dithering impact perceived detail and smoothness.

Advantages include high color quality for photos, flexible media handling, and relatively low per-page cost at small or moderate volumes. Limitations include potential clogging of nozzles, slower print speeds for text compared with some laser printers, and higher running costs for color printing if large volumes are produced. Maintenance involves occasional nozzle cleaning and cartridge or reservoir replacement.
