Core functions include authentication and authorization, request routing and load balancing, rate limiting, protocol translation, and observability through centralized logging and metrics. Infrastructure proxies can also provide secure access to private resources through features like zero-trust access, mutual authentication, and TLS termination. By shaping how requests reach infrastructure services, they help standardize controls across disparate environments.

Deployment models typically include forward proxies, reverse proxies, API gateways, and edge proxies. In practice, infrastructureproxies terminate TLS, validate identities against identity providers, and forward requests to backend services via service discovery. They are often designed to be stateless and horizontally scalable, leveraging caching and connection pooling to improve throughput and resilience.
