Least privilege, or the principle of least privilege (PoLP), is a security concept asserting that users, programs, and processes should operate only with the minimum set of privileges needed to perform their tasks. Limiting privileges reduces the potential impact of errors, misconfigurations, or malicious actions and constrains the scope of a breach.

Scope and application include all layers of an IT environment: user accounts, service or application accounts, operating systems, databases, networks, and cloud services. Privileges can govern data access, configuration changes, or the ability to execute privileged operations. Distinctions are often made between human users, processes, and automated agents, each of which should be granted only what is necessary.

Implementation methods involve policy and architecture choices. Role-based access control (RBAC), attribute-based access control (ABAC), and policy-based access control (PBAC) are common frameworks. Just-in-time elevation and temporary privileges help limit exposure. Practical measures include using dedicated service accounts, minimizing admin rights on desktops, restricting fluent or broad permissions, and employing containerization or virtualization to contain elevated tasks. Privilege management tools and continuous monitoring with regular access reviews support enforcement and auditing.

Benefits and challenges: applying least privilege limits damage from exploits, supports regulatory compliance, and improves operational visibility. Challenges include policy complexity, privilege creep, maintenance overhead, and potential disruption to workflows if privileges are too restrictive. Effective implementation requires ongoing review, automation, and alignment with broader security practices such as separation of duties and defense in depth.

In practice, least privilege is embedded in many security standards and cloud IAM models. It is reinforced by common examples like sudo on Unix-like systems and user access governance in enterprise environments.
