Attribute-based refers to approaches that base access, authorization, or cryptographic decisions on attributes rather than solely on identity or role. Attributes describe characteristics of a subject, an object, or the environment, such as department, data sensitivity, time, or location.

Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) uses policies that match combinations of attributes to permissions. Subjects present attributes; objects carry metadata; environmental attributes provide context. Access is determined by evaluating policies in a policy language such as XACML, enabling fine-grained, context-aware authorization without fixed roles.

Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) is a cryptographic paradigm in which ciphertexts and keys embed attributes. In ciphertext-policy ABE (CP-ABE), decryption requires an attribute set satisfying the encryption policy; in key-policy ABE (KP-ABE), keys define allowed attribute combinations. ABE supports secure data sharing in untrusted environments.

ABAC and ABE address different goals but are related. ABAC governs access decisions in systems; ABE protects data itself. ABAC differs from RBAC by supporting richer, dynamic attributes instead of fixed roles.

Challenges include managing attributes at scale, revocation, policy complexity, performance overhead, and privacy concerns. Effective practice relies on standardized attribute schemas, centralized authorities, governance, and interoperability considerations.

Applications include enterprise IT, cloud data sharing, healthcare information systems, and IoT protection where policy-driven access or encryption improves compliance and risk management.
