Ihotulehduksen, also known as tendinitis or tendinopathy in medical terminology, refers to inflammation or degeneration of a tendon—the fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone. It commonly occurs due to overuse, repetitive strain, or injury, leading to pain, swelling, and tenderness in the affected area. Ihotulehduksen can affect tendons throughout the body but is frequently seen in the shoulder (rotator cuff tendinitis), elbow (tennis elbow), wrist, knee (patellar tendinitis), and Achilles tendon.

The primary causes of ihotulehduksen include repetitive motion, sudden increases in activity intensity, improper technique during physical activities, or direct trauma. Factors such as age, poor biomechanics, muscle imbalance, and inadequate warm-up can also contribute to its development.

Symptoms typically involve localized pain that worsens with activity or movement, stiffness, and sometimes swelling or weakness in the affected tendon. Diagnosis is primarily based on clinical examination, with imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI used to confirm inflammation or degenerative changes.

Treatment strategies focus on reducing pain and facilitating tendon healing. These may include rest, ice application, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, and activity modification. In chronic cases, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, corticosteroid injections, or surgical intervention may be considered.

Prevention of ihotulehduksen involves adequate warm-up, proper technique, strength training to balance muscle groups, and avoiding repetitive overuse. Early intervention and appropriate management are essential to prevent tendon rupture or chronic disability.
