Hypertrophy refers to the growth of an organ or tissue due to an increase in the size of its cells, rather than an increase in their number. This process is distinct from hyperplasia, which involves an increase in cell number. Hypertrophy is commonly observed in muscle tissue, where it results in increased muscle mass and strength, a phenomenon often pursued in strength training and bodybuilding.

In skeletal muscles, hypertrophy occurs in response to mechanical stress, such as resistance exercise. When muscles are subjected to progressive overload—gradually increasing the demands placed on them—the body adapts by increasing muscle fiber size.
