Gyökérfelületek, a Hungarian term, translates to "root surfaces" in English and is a concept primarily used in dentistry. It refers to the area of the tooth root that is exposed to the oral environment due to gingival recession or periodontal disease. This exposure can lead to various dental issues, as the root surface is not as protected as the enamel covering the crown of the tooth.

The primary characteristic of exposed root surfaces is their dentin composition. Unlike enamel, dentin is softer and more porous, making it susceptible to wear, erosion, and hypersensitivity. The cementum, which normally covers the root, can also be lost in these areas. This loss of protective layers exposes the dentinal tubules, which are microscopic channels leading to the tooth's pulp.

Consequently, patients with significant root surface exposure often experience dentin hypersensitivity. This manifests as sharp, short-lived pain in response to stimuli such as cold or hot temperatures, sweet or acidic foods, or even mechanical contact like toothbrushing. Furthermore, the exposed dentin can be more prone to cavities, known as root caries, which can progress rapidly due to the softer nature of the root structure.

The management of gyökérfelületek involves addressing the underlying cause, such as improving oral hygiene, treating periodontal disease, or modifying brushing habits. Treatment for sensitivity may include desensitizing toothpastes, varnishes, or bonding agents applied by a dentist. Restorative treatments might be necessary for root caries to prevent further tooth loss.
