Grupilisation is a theoretical concept in complex systems describing how a largely interconnected network can spontaneously reorganize into modular substructures called grups. A grup is a relatively cohesive cluster of nodes with higher internal connectivity and shared functions than with the surrounding network. The term is used mainly in sociology, organizational theory, and network science to explain emergent modularity without centralized control.

The process is driven by local interaction rules and constraints. Individuals or nodes preferentially strengthen ties within nearby or similar groups, while cross-group links are costly or risky. Positive feedback, resource limits, and occasional perturbations reinforce within-group cohesion. Over time, the network tends toward a pattern in which grups are semi-stable and interact mainly across boundaries through specific interfaces.

In urban design, planning policies may influence grupilisation by shaping transport, communication, and resource flows to support or limit subgroup formation.

Critiques note that grupilisation can lead to fragmentation and reduced cross-group collaboration, potentially hindering system-wide resilience. Distinguishing it from generic clustering requires observing the dynamics over time, not just static partitions. The concept remains a subject of debate and is often used as a descriptive framework rather than a predictive model.
