The grinti are a fictional mammal described in fantasy literature and role-playing settings. They are native to the temperate forests of the Nivara Highlands, where they move quietly through the understory at night. Grinti are notable for their large eyes, sensitive whiskers, and a stocky build that enables careful foraging in dense vegetation.

Etymology and taxonomy are variable across sources. The name grinti is said to derive from the Grintic language, meaning “shadow hunter.” In many lore compendia, the scientific designation is given as Grintus grinti, placed in the family Grintidae and the order Carnivora in a traditional taxonomy, though some modern guides treat the creature as a basal caniform or as a nonstandard carnivore lineage.

Description and biology. Adults typically measure 60–90 cm in body length, with a 12–20 cm tail and a weight of 3–7 kg. Their fur is predominantly ash gray with russet flanks and a pale face mask. They have sturdy limbs, retractile claws for digging and minor climbing, and a keen sense of smell that aids in locating prey and edible plants. Grinti are primarily terrestrial but make short forays into low branches when foraging.

Habitat and ecology. Grinti inhabit montane temperate forests at elevations of roughly 600–1,500 meters, often near streams or mossy clearings. They are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on small vertebrates, invertebrates, berries, and forest fungi. They typically form solitary or paired living arrangements and use shallow burrows or root networks for shelter.

Behavior and reproduction. Grinti are nocturnal and territorial, marking ranges with scent deposits. Breeding occurs in spring, with a gestation of about 60–70 days and litters of 2–4 offspring. Weaning happens within two to three months, and offspring reach sexual maturity around 10–12 months.

Conservation and cultural significance. In the lore of several region-based cultures, grinti are regarded as guardians of forests and streams. In-game and narrative materials may describe habitat threats from deforestation and climate shifts, with some settings granting protections in forest reserves.
