The formation of glasbulle often begins with human-made glass, such as bottles or other discarded items, that are broken into smaller fragments. These fragments are then subjected to the abrasive action of sand, rocks, and the relentless movement of water. Over years, or even decades, this constant tumbling and grinding process smooths the sharp edges and gradually shapes the glass into rounded forms.

The appearance of glasbulle can vary greatly depending on the original color of the glass and the duration of its weathering. Common colors include green, brown, and clear, reflecting the typical hues of discarded beverage bottles. The surface of a glasbulle is typically frosted or matte, a result of the abrasive process, rather than smooth and shiny like a polished gemstone.
