Some regions also require professional licensure or certification for certain practice areas, especially when geoscientists provide official conclusions or regulatory recommendations.

Geoscientists work in academia, government agencies, and industry, including mining, oil and gas, environmental consulting, water resources, and disaster risk management. They contribute to natural resource management, infrastructure planning, environmental protection, and climate-related research, providing scientific knowledge to inform policy, safety, and sustainable development.
