A gamekeeper is a person employed to manage land with the aim of producing sustainable populations of game species for hunting and sport, typically on private estates, shooting grounds, or nature reserves. The role is especially associated with rural areas in the United Kingdom and Ireland, though similar positions exist elsewhere under different titles such as ranger or wildlife manager.

Duties include habitat management to provide food, cover, and nesting sites for game; maintaining hedgerows, woodlands, wetlands, and grassland; woodland management such as coppicing and replanting; controlling predators and pests; breeding, rearing, and releasing game birds or deer as appropriate; coordinating feeding regimes and water provision; monitoring population trends and welfare; and maintaining fences, gates, drainage, and other infrastructure. They also organise or participate in beat days and drives on shooting estates and may train or supervise beaters and dogs. They must comply with wildlife, hunting, and land-use laws and often work with landowners, shooting tenants, and conservation groups.

Training and qualifications vary by country but commonly include vocational courses or apprenticeships in gamekeeping and wildlife management, as well as practical experience. In the UK, professional associations and educational programs offer diplomas and certificates; in other regions, similar credentials exist under forestry, wildlife, or natural resources programs.

Historically, gamekeepers have been central to estate management from medieval times to the present, balancing game production with habitat conservation. Modern practice increasingly emphasizes sustainable harvest, ecosystem management, and animal welfare, and public scrutiny and legislation shape their duties.
