The term is a compound of funkeln (to sparkle) and glitzern (to glitter) and is used in some scientific and artistic contexts to describe transient luminescent events that are distinct from steady fluorescence or phosphorescence.

Mechanisms vary by material but share a common feature: short, stochastic release of photons from localized energy states. In nanostructured materials such as quantum dots or doped crystals, excitons or charge carriers can become trapped in defect or surface states and release energy sporadically, yielding flickering points of light.
